1. INDICATIONS AND USAGE
Actos is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
It may be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications, such as metformin, insulin, or sulfonylureas.
2. DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION
The recommended starting dose of Actos is 15 mg or 30 mg once daily.
It can be taken with or without food.
3. CONTRAINDICATIONS
Actos is contraindicated in patients with a history of a hypersensitivity reaction to pioglitazone or any of its components.
It should not be used in patients with active bladder cancer.
4. WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
Congestive Heart Failure: Actos may cause or exacerbate congestive heart failure. Patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of heart failure.
Bladder Cancer: There may be an increased risk of bladder cancer associated with Actos, especially in long-term use.
Fractures: An increased incidence of bone fractures has been observed in female patients.
5. ADVERSE REACTIONS
Common side effects include upper respiratory tract infection, headache, sinusitis, myalgia, and tooth disorder.
6. DRUG INTERACTIONS
Inform your healthcare provider of all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, as they may interact with Actos.
7. USE IN SPECIFIC POPULATIONS
Pregnancy: There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of Actos use in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Lactation: It is not known whether pioglitazone is excreted in human milk. Use caution when administering Actos to a nursing woman.
8. OVERDOSAGE
In case of an overdose, contact a poison control center or seek medical assistance immediately.
